Don’t use exam results to mock candidates
KCSE exams. Every year, candidates who score bottom Grades D and E have everything to be ashamed of.
Exam results • The 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination results have been received with jubilation by the candidates who excelled and sadness among those who did poorly, says F. Mukembu. “But exam outcomes shouldn’t be used to mock those who may have different abilities. Let’s not despise anyone for obtaining a lower exam grade.” His contact is [email protected].

Shameful • Whenever national examination results are announced, Richard Kihara says, he gets irritated to hear mention of the bottom Grades D and E. “Education policymakers should stop this. Of what use are the poor grades, which mean four years of nothing but despair and frustration? Every year, over 50 per cent of the candidates have everything to be ashamed of.” His contact is [email protected].

Intriguing • Intrigued by the existence in many towns in the country of slums nicknamed ‘Kisumu Ndogo’ after the famous urban centre on the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya that initially hosted settlers from there, Carey Yiembe is keenly watching the events unravelling in Minnesota, US. He poses: “Are we likely to see ‘Minnesota Ndogos’ also pop up?” His contact is [email protected].

Bullying • Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro’s ouster by US forces over drug trafficking claims was in bad taste, says Alnashir D. Walji. “This was a violation of sovereignty and a breach of international law. It’s a superpower bullying a smaller nation as the US meddles in Venezuela’s affairs. Venezuelans must have a say in the running of their country.” His contact is [email protected].

Greatness • The latest escapade of the lone superpower has left Muriithi reflecting on what greatness is all about. Says he: “There’s a difference between being great and feeling great. Does the abduction of Venezuela’s leader Maduro make Americans great or feel great? Is this the greatness that President Donald Trump promised as he sought re-election?” His contact is [email protected].
Have a meaningful day, won’t you!
