Crackdown needed on rogue churches

The recent incident in Bomet County, where a woman was brutally beaten in a church under the guise of exorcising demons, is deeply disheartening.

This follows another disturbing video that surfaced, showing an elderly woman being burned alive in a so-called religious ritual. Such horrifying acts highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations on churches and the eradication of cult-like religious practices.

In recent years, the number of churches in Kenya has surged, with some operating without proper licensing or oversight. Many individuals now establish churches primarily as a source of income rather than for genuine spiritual guidance. To attract large congregations, some resort to deceitful means, including staged miracles and false prophecies. It is common to witness preachers coercing congregants into giving offerings, often through manipulation and almost forceful demands.

The core mission of a true church should be to foster worship, spiritual growth, and evangelism. A legitimate church should conduct regular services centred on biblical teachings, spread the Gospel to non-believers, and nurture faith among its members. Churches should also focus on discipleship by mentoring believers, offering Bible study programmes, and providing moral and spiritual guidance.

Fellowship and community support should be at the heart of church activities, creating a nurturing environment where members feel valued and encouraged. Furthermore, churches should engage in charitable works, supporting the less fortunate, advocating for social justice, and contributing positively to society. Ethical leadership within the church is crucial in ensuring transparency, integrity, and accountability.

Unfortunately, only a few churches adhere to these principles. Some preachers have been seen publicly humiliating needy members, dismissing them, and advising them to seek help from government offices or police stations. While churches may not have the financial means to assist everyone, they should at least offer words of encouragement and hope.

The government must take decisive action to curb rogue churches and unscrupulous preachers. Abigael Kibanga, Maseno University
