The transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA) has left many Kenyans confused about how the new system works. The lack of clear communication from the government has resulted in frustration, with many people uncertain about how SHA will cover their medical bills.

One major issue is the distinction between SHA and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). Many Kenyans do not understand how the two relate, which has made it difficult for patients to access treatment in hospitals. Additionally, hospitals have reported delays in receiving payments from SHA. This has worsened the situation, leaving many Kenyans unable to access essential care.

Another pressing concern is the registration process. Many citizens, especially those who are less literate, do not know whether they need to re-register under SHA or if their NHIF data will be automatically transferred. This has led to situations where patients visit hospitals assuming they are covered, only to be informed that they are not.

The government, particularly the Ministry of Health, must take responsibility for educating Kenyans about this transition. There needs to be a nationwide awareness campaign through various media and community outreach programmess. The ministry should also establish accessible helplines and service centres where citizens can get accurate information and assistance.

Healthcare is a fundamental right, and the transition from NHIF to SHA should not be a barrier to accessing services. The government must act urgently to address the confusion, streamline the registration process, and ensure that funds are disbursed to hospitals on time. Only then can SHA fulfil its intended purpose.

The government has said that there will be no food aid for starving Turkana residents without being registered under SHA. This decision is unreasonable. Is SHA now being used as a political tool? SHA can wait but hunger cannot. Turkana Central Deputy Commissioner Thomas Siele should not compare SHA benefits with food aid.
