As we celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities, a time of joy, celebration and coming together with loved ones, we also find ourselves on the roads more frequently.

During this period, it is crucial to exercise extra caution and responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users.

The festive season should be a time of happiness, not marred by avoidable accidents and tragedies.

Let us all remain sober, keen and attentive while driving. Alcohol and driving are a dangerous mix, and the consequences can be devastating. If you plan on consuming alcohol, please make arrangements for alternative transportation. Whether it's a designated driver, taxi, or ride-sharing service, these options can prevent potentially life-threatening situations.

Additionally, always be mindful of other road users. This includes pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.

Maintaining a vigilant attitude and respecting traffic rules can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Keep an eye on your speedometer; driving within the speed limits is not only a legal requirement but a vital measure to ensure everyone’s safety on the road.

It's essential to remember that during the festive season, roads can be busier with people traveling to visit family and friends, attending parties, and engaging in various activities.

This increased traffic heightens the need for all motorists to be particularly cautious and patient.

Avoid distractions while driving. This includes using your phone, eating or engaging in any activity that takes your attention away from the road. It is also advisable to plan your journeys in advance. Give yourself ample time to reach your destination to avoid the temptation of speeding.

Be prepared for changing weather conditions, which can affect road safety. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, with functioning lights, brakes, and tires.

By following these guidelines, you are not only protecting yourself but also contributing to the safety and well-being of everyone on the road.

Let's make this festive season memorable for the right reasons by prioritising safety and responsibility.
