This week, as London hosted the largest Climate Action Week in its eight-year history (over 1,000 events), ministers from dozens of nations, five COP presidencies convened under one theme, the streets outside were literally on fire.
Europe was struck by its second severe heat wave in as many months, with records shattering in Belgium, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Ireland. The “Heat Dome” served up a thermal assault so intense it was projected to shatter hundreds of June temperature records, with some regions threatening all-time highs normally reserved for late July. France recorded its hottest day in history.
Spain had its worst June since 1950. The United Kingdom broke its June record. The theme of London Climate Action Week was “Cooperation in a Fragmented World”. To be honest, with alliances fracturing and multilateral ambition strangled by power politics, this heat wave felt like a reminder of what’s at stake. That the extremes would not wait for diplomats to get their act together. It did not respect the agenda. It arrived as a physical, suffocating reminder of what is already here. And with every complaint about the unbearable temperatures, a louder voice rose from somewhere we could not ignore, saying: It’s going to get worse.
It felt entirely right, then, that amid the heat and the urgency, London would also host the world premiere of “Voices in Mutirão: A Story of the Global Ethical Stocktake”. This is a documentary by directors Leonardo Menezes and Eduardo Carvalho that looked inward. Born from a vision shared by President Lula Da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and carried forward with fierce moral conviction by Brazil’s then-Minister of Environment Marina Silva, this was no ordinary film. It was a testament. An initiative of Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The film offered a behind-the-scenes look at the dialogues of the Global Ethical Stocktake, held across all continents throughout 2025 as one of the pillars for mobilising society ahead of COP30. By the time the negotiations concluded in Belém, 125 civil society-led dialogues had taken place around the world, drawing more than 15,000 participants from 49 nations. The Global Ethical Stocktake was built on the following question: if we already know what needs to be done to tackle the climate crisis, why are we not doing it?
The answer, as Brazil’s Minister Marina Silva put it, is that we possess virtually all the technical solutions, and what is needed is the ethical commitment to apply them.
The documentary was a reminder that the climate crisis is not only a failure of technology or policy but rather a failure of moral imagination. The GES reminded a fragmented world of the most unifying truth we have: no one is safe until everyone is safe. And yet none of this will happen on its own. The most dangerous idea in the climate crisis is not denial. It is the quiet, comfortable assumption that someone, somewhere, will take care of it.
The engineers will invent our way out. The diplomats will negotiate a solution. That the problem is simply too large for any one person to matter. The truth is that the GES was built on the conviction that ethical values and our shared humanity, justice, solidarity, and shared responsibility must become the compass that guides not just multilateral negotiations but every decision at every level of society. Local and Regional coalitions.
Global commitments. All of it connected and necessary work, but none of it is possible without the deliberate, unglamorous work of showing up. This matters most urgently for the communities on the frontliners of floods, droughts, and displacement, for whom resilience is a daily act of survival and who did not create this crisis but bear its heaviest cost In a world that feels, on any given news cycle, as though it is coming apart at the seams, the GES dialogues offered a countervailing truth: that across six continents, in languages and cultures and faiths as diverse as the planet itself, we as a human family share far more than the headlines would have us believe.
This week in London made that visible. So too did an anniversary that passed quietly in Kenya this week, two years since thousands of young Kenyans occupied Parliament in June 2024, driven not by despair but by an unshakeable insistence on a better future. The contexts could not be more different. The thread could not be more the same.
Whether in the streets of Nairobi or in a climate dialogue in New Delhi or a premiere at the venue on a sweltering London afternoon, people keep showing up because they refuse to surrender what has not yet been lost. The dream of a better world is still alive. It survives whenever people choose cooperation over division. In a fragmented world threatening to fracture further, that may be our greatest (and most renewable) resource.
