KICD launches Grade 11 Textbooks and Literary Texts
Sponsored by Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, a government agency under the Ministry of Education, is mandated by an Act of Parliament (KICD Act No.4 of 2013) to develop, review, and approve curricula, programmes and curriculum support materials that meet international standards for Basic and Teacher Education below university level.
The Institute has finalised evaluation and procurement of Grade 11 textbooks and is ready to distribute them to Senior schools for use by learners from January 2027.
KICD has also developed curriculum designs and adapted textbooks for learners pursuing Special Needs Education (SNE), including learners following the Stage-Based Pathway.
On October 6, 2026, KICD launched the distribution of these textbooks for regular and SNE learners. The distribution will continue until October 23, 2026, and take a break during the forthcoming National Examinations. The distribution will continue after the exams, during weekdays, until December 23, 2026. School principals are urged to ensure that there will be staff present in schools to receive the books.
KICD wishes to caution teachers, parents, learners, education stakeholders, and the public that use of non-approved curriculum support materials in Kenyan schools is unlawful, as it is in contravention of Section 27 of the KICD ACT of 2013, and therefore punishable by Law. Teachers should ensure the books they advise parents to buy for their children are approved by KICD, to uphold high standards in curriculum delivery.
The Institute will continue to carry out monitoring of the curriculum implementation to ascertain that all aspects are proceeding as envisaged.
The list of approved textbooks and literary texts in the Orange Book is accessible through the KICD Website: www.kicd.ac.ke. All the developed curriculum designs are also available at the KICD Bookshop and Website. You may also download a PDF copy of the list that has additional messaging, from here.
