Kilifi County is making significant strides in transforming its road network to improve accessibility, boost business, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

The County Government, through its Roads Department, has made tremendous progress in the last two years, focusing on key infrastructure developments that are crucial for both the local community and potential investors.

The Governor, H.E Gideon Mung’aro, who has shown deep commitment to developing the county’s infrastructure, has prioritised road improvements as a cornerstone of his development strategy. His dedication to creating a robust transport system is aimed at facilitating movement, therefore facilitating economic activities and positioning Kilifi as an attractive destination for investment.

Key milestones

The Roads Department has upgraded and expanded sections of the county’s road network, demonstrating both commitment and capacity to address the mobility needs of residents, businesses, and visitors. Notable achievements include the following:

  1. Upgrading to bitumen standard (4km): Four kilometres of roads have been upgraded to bitumen standards, enhancing connectivity and facilitating smoother, safer travel for both local and long-distance traffic. This improvement is expected to have a direct positive impact on trade, tourism and transport within the county.
  2. Upgrading to cabro standard (9km): Nine kilometres of key roads have been paved with cabro blocks, which are more durable and aesthetically pleasant. This will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the roads while providing better access to vital services, including health facilities and markets.
  3. Gravelling (240km): The county government has successfully paved 240km of rural roads with gravel, improving accessibility to remote areas. This crucial development has opened up new opportunities for local farmers and traders, allowing them to transport goods more efficiently to the market.
  4. Opening and Grading (1,200 km): A remarkable 1,200km of new roads have been opened and graded, ensuring that even the most isolated communities are connected to essential services. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the lives of rural residents by providing better access to healthcare, education, and other essential services.
  5. Construction of 10 drifts: The Roads Department has completed the construction of 10 drifts, crucial infrastructure that improves water management and prevents road erosion. These drifts help maintain road standards during rainy seasons, ensuring continued access across flood-prone areas.

These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of the County Government to delivering quality infrastructure that supports sustainable development and meets the needs of a growing population.

Opportunities for investors and stakeholders

As Kilifi County continues to upgrade its road network, opportunities abound for investors and stakeholders to partner with the local government in various infrastructure projects. Key projects where private sector involvement would be highly beneficial include:

  1. Landing jetty at Maya: One of the most pressing needs is the construction of a landing jetty at Maya, which would play a critical role in transporting materials from Jaribuni to other parts of the county and beyond. This project would provide a major boost to the region’s trade and logistics capabilities, offering attractive returns on investment for those willing to come on board.
  2. Landing jetty at Takaungu: The fishermen in Takaungu face significant challenges in transporting their catch due to limited infrastructure. A well-equipped landing jetty at Takaungu would not only help fishermen but also contribute to the growth of the county’s maritime economy, particularly in the fishing industry. Investors interested in the blue economy are encouraged to explore this opportunity.
  3. Renovation of Buntwani landing site: The renovation of the Buntwani landing site would enhance the livelihoods of local fishermen and boost the fishing industry in Kilifi. Upgrading this vital infrastructure would also improve trade and tourism along the coast.
  4. Upgrading Jaribuni-Maya road to bitumen standard: Governor Mung’aro has emphasised the importance of connecting the county’s quarry sites to the proposed Maya landing jetty. Upgrading the Jaribuni-Maya road to bitumen standard would significantly ease the transport of construction materials, providing greater access for investors in the building and construction sector.
  5. Upgrading roads to the beaches: As a prime tourist destination, Kilifi County’s beaches are key to its growing tourism industry. Upgrading the roads that connect the beaches to major towns will enhance tourism, making it easier for tourists to access these beautiful destinations. Private investors and tourism stakeholders have a great opportunity to collaborate on the development of infrastructure that supports the growth of the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Governor Mung'aro's vision for Kilifi’s future

Governor Mung’aro says his vision for Kilifi County is to create a dynamic, well-connected, and prosperous region where infrastructure drives sustainable development. With an eye on improving the lives of the people and positioning Kilifi as an investment hub, the Governor is keen to engage both public and private sector partners in a variety of infrastructure projects.

“The development of our roads is just the beginning,” the Governor states. “We are focused on transforming Kilifi into a county that is not only easy to navigate but also one that offers vast opportunities for business and investment. We welcome investors, stakeholders and partners to join us in this journey.”
