Inter-university transfers and late application for placements now open: Why you should consider MKU

If you are planning to enrol for university education, consider making Mount Kenya University (MKU) your preferred choice. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened a late application window that allows anyone who qualifies, to apply for placement (https://students.kuccps.ac.ke/).
This opportunity is open to any learner who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination between 2022 and 2025. Such individuals should have attained the minimum university admission qualification grade of C+ or higher.
This special window closes on August 14.

During the first half of this year, MKU students excelled at global competitions, raising the university’ profile. The students won in international competitions hosted in China and the United States of America (USA).
MKU student Brian Ngugi was in the Kenyan team that won the Grand Prize in the Cloud Track at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025-2026 Global Finals in June. In this first ever such win for the country, Ngugi teamed up with his counterparts Catherine Atieno of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kevin Tuel of Tharaka Nithi University, and Salem Kim of Machakos University.
In May this year, four MKU students secured a finalist award at the prestigious Wege Prize 2026, held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. The team comprised Wesley Njenga, Franklin Mwendwa, Elijah Maina, and Ejike Chinyere, all from the School of Public Health. They walked away with $2,500. Their ground-breaking innovation – EcoScrubber – is a hybrid emission control and carbon-capture system that transforms toxic pollutants from incinerator chimneys into usable construction materials.
The Wege Prize, organised by Michigan-based Ferris State University's Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD), challenges university students from around the world to collaboratively solve complex systems-level problems by developing products, services, and business models based on the three core principles of the circular economy: Eliminating waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in circulation, and regenerating natural systems.
Speaking during the award ceremony, team leader Wesley Njenga expressed pride in how the university had supported their journey to the global stage. “We were honoured to showcase home-grown solutions like Ecoscrubber, as well as compete with the best in the world,” he said.

These wins continue a tradition that MKU has sustained over the years – and is among the reasons the university attracts students from tens of nationalities. Currently, students from more than 40 countries study at the university.

As some learners win awards, others are busy working with top tech firms.
For example, as MKU Head of Innovation Donatus Njoroge points out, Valery Mwiti, a student, is building community engagement platforms alongside some of Germany’s brightest tech minds, exploring how adaptive systems can bridge educational gaps not just in Kenya, but globally.
She is attached to Quipu, an edtech company in Munich that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to personalise learning. A few months ago, the computer science student at MKU spent hours at the institution’s innovation and incubation centre, sketching ideas on smart boards, writing code and participating in weekly pitch sessions.
She is not alone. Four other students – Farhiya Maalim, Victor Mboya, Caleb Baraka and Hope Wangari – are spread across Bavaria, each embedded in a different company and each carrying the same weight of expectation. They are part of the second cohort of the landmark Africa Meet Bavaria innovation exchange programme that is quietly rewriting the rules of global innovation.
