Reports of missing children, kidnappings, school transport confusion, and children being separated from guardians in crowded urban spaces are increasingly shaping the national conversation on parenting and safety.
While official statistics vary and many incidents go unreported, the effect has been to make parenting more vigilant and digitally coordinated, with growing reliance on real-time communication tools to bridge moments of uncertainty, especially for parents with school-going children.
It is within this widening gap between expectation and assurance that technology-led solutions are beginning to emerge, including Terra GO, a product developed by Terra, a Kenyan tech and digital infrastructure company founded by Collins Muriuki.

The platform offers child safety wearables designed to provide structured visibility during key transition moments, such as leaving home, arriving at school, or being picked up by a guardian. “Our products sit within what we describe as ‘light-touch safety technology’, designed to help parents maintain visibility without turning children into permanently monitored subjects,” he explains.
The products include a wristband for older children who can comfortably wear and manage a device throughout the day, and a bag tag intended for younger children or those who may not consistently keep a wearable attached to their body.

Rather than continuously tracking movement, the products focus on key transition points where responsibility shifts between home, transport, and school environments. The company says many challenges arise not from technological limitations, but from communication gaps at these handover points and brief misalignments between expectation and reality.
“For schools, these breakdowns are not occasional. Many institutions continue to manage dismissal and transport through paper manifests, phone calls and fragmented communication channels,” says Muriuki. He adds that as school populations grow and transport operations become more complex, administrative pressure on staff increases, particularly during peak pick-up and drop-off periods, where miscommunication can create gaps in accountability.

In urban centres and growing satellite towns, school commutes often involve multiple actors, including school bus drivers, informal caregivers, domestic workers, and sometimes neighbours or relatives involved in transport arrangements. Each handover point relies on communication and coordination among those responsible for a child’s movement, a gap that Terra GO’s system seeks to address by logging defined “handover moments”. The wristband and tag retail at Sh3,500 and are being rolled out across private schools in Nairobi.
They are currently in use in five schools, ahead of planned expansion into public schools. Schools adopting Terra GO are also beginning to view transport management as an operational issue rather than solely a safety concern, with some exploring its use for route coordination, attendance tracking, and parent communication.
“Once schools begin digitising movement and coordination processes, they also start identifying opportunities to improve planning and operations across different parts of the school,” Muriuki explains. This distinction places the startup within an expansive global debate about the role of tracking technologies in family life. While GPS-enabled devices and smart wearables have become increasingly common in many markets, they have also raised concerns about data privacy, over-monitoring, and the psychological effects of constant digital oversight on children.

Across parenting communities, including online forums, there is ongoing tension between the reassurance these tools provide and concerns that they may inadvertently undermine a child's sense of independence.
In Kenya, the debate is further shaped by data protection regulations, developing digital infrastructure, and uneven connectivity. The Data Protection Act has established clearer requirements for handling, storing, and processing minors’ personal information, requiring startups to operate within a more regulated environment.
“We are dealing with information that involves children, so the threshold for responsibility is naturally higher,” he notes. From the beginning, Muriuki says, the system was designed to retain only what is necessary for its function, noting that if a parent is asking whether a child arrived at school or was picked up at the right time, that is the only question the system should be answering. Terra GO’s reach extends beyond the school gate.
The waterproof wearables are compatible with Apple’s Find My and Google Find Hub networks and can last up to a year on a single battery cycle. The platform integrates with consumer location networks, allowing parents to track tagged belongings during weekends, school holidays, and family travel, whether within large residential estates or when travelling upcountry.

“We realised parents were also looking for simple ways to stay connected with their children outside the school environment without compromising their independence,” Muriuki explains, and adds, “If a parent can go through their day without that lingering uncertainty about whether their child arrived safely where they were supposed to be, then we believe we have done something meaningful.”
