Popular comedian and YouTuber Sammy Kioko has broken his silence after a brutal assault that left him hospitalised, saying the overwhelming support he received from Kenyans carried him through one of the darkest moments of his life.
Speaking as he left Nairobi West Hospital after nine days, Kioko said he drew strength from a community that refused to abandon him even as he battled pain, uncertainty and frustration over unpaid dues.
“I carried a voice that refused to stay silent,” he said. “Through interviews, pain, and attacks, I faced the unthinkable, yet never felt alone.”
Kioko, who had been admitted following an alleged attack by security officers and hired goons in Machakos Town, said the solidarity shown by ordinary citizens, artists, leaders and youth groups gave him hope.
“In hospitals and on crutches, every visit, every prayer, and every message became my strength. I walked out of the darkness not as a victim, but as a survivor,” he said.
The assault has since ignited nationwide outrage, reopening the debate on delayed county payments and the treatment of young entrepreneurs seeking compensation for services rendered.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited Kioko in hospital, expressing concern over his condition and calling for calm as investigations continue.
“I visited Sammy Kioko to stand with him and his family during this difficult time,” Musyoka said. “My hope is that this issue will proceed with sobriety and a clear focus on the facts so that Sammy can heal in peace.”
Mr Musyoka said he had spoken to Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who he said was keen on ensuring the matter is handled transparently.
Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu and Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda also visited Kioko, condemning the attack as unjustified and warning against intimidation of youth engaged in legitimate business.
“It is sad to see young Kenyans sink into depression after taking loans and fulfilling contracts, only to remain unpaid,” said Mutinda.
Kavindu added, “No supplier should be assaulted for demanding what is rightfully theirs. This must stop.”
The incident sparked protests in Machakos Town, where dozens of youth took to the streets under the banner “Justice for Kioko,” bringing business to a standstill.
At the centre of the dispute is Kioko’s company, linked to his sister and business partner Moureen Mwende, which supplied uniforms to the Machakos County inspectorate.
The contract, valued at about Sh19 million, remains unpaid years after delivery.
“The most troubling part is that the people who assaulted us wore the uniforms we supplied,” she said. “We acted in good faith, and to be met with violence is deeply upsetting.”
Kioko maintains that despite delivering under a Sh20 million contract during the 2023/2024 financial year, he has only received Sh20,000—claims he says are backed by mobile money records.
Governor Ndeti has disputed parts of Kioko’s claims, saying he is not a registered supplier and that due process must be followed before any payments are made.
She noted that her administration inherited pending bills worth Sh2.12 billion and has so far paid Sh642 million in historical debts and Sh249 million in current claims.
“All verified claims will be honoured, but payments must follow strict audit and legal frameworks,” she said, adding that the county applies a first-in, first-out system.
County Secretary Muya Ndambuki criticised the protests, arguing that delayed payments are a nationwide issue and warning against misinformation.
The saga has highlighted growing tensions between county governments and youth contractors, many of whom rely on timely payments to service loans and sustain their businesses.
Analysts warn that persistent delays and intimidation risk discouraging entrepreneurship and undermining confidence in public procurement systems.
Machakos County Assembly Minority Leader Francis Kavyu described the assault as “an attack on justice and the rule of law,” warning that residents could take further action if accountability is not achieved.
Despite the pain and uncertainty, Kioko says he remains committed to speaking out.
“To everyone who stood by me, who prayed, who marched, who spoke up—thank you,” he said. “Your fight against impunity is what kept me going.”
As he continues his recovery, Kioko has become more than a victim—emerging as a symbol of resilience and a rallying point for young Kenyans demanding fairness, dignity and accountability in business.
For many, his story is no longer just about one man’s ordeal, but a reflection of a broader struggle for justice in Kenya’s evolving economic landscape.
