15 killed, 14 injured in Kaplong-Kericho highway multiple car crash

13 killed, 14 injured in a multiple car crash on Kaplong-Kericho highway

At least 15 people have died in a multiple-car crash on the Kaplong-Kericho highway on Saturday.

Bomet County Traffic Enforcement Officer Amos Namasaka said 14 others sustained injuries. A spot check showed that six were admitted to St Clare's Kaplong Hospital, five to Tenwek Hospital and three to Litein AIC Hospital.

"A total of 15 people have died, while 14 have been admitted to various hospitals in the county. The three vehicles were reduced to mangled wrecks," Mr Namasaka said.

He said investigations had begun to establish the cause of the accident.

The incident at Cheptanguge village in Daraja Sita area between Kaplong and Kapkatet trading centres involved a truck transporting sand, a 14-seater matatu and a saloon car.

The matatu belonging to Member Travellers Sacco and the saloon car were travelling to Bomet from Kericho, while the lorry was heading to Kapkatet in Kericho County.

Eyewitnesses said the saloon car attempted to overtake the matatu when it collided head-on with the oncoming lorry.

The bodies of the victims have since been taken to Kapkatet Sub County Hospital in Kericho County for preservation.
