A chief and a teacher were killed on Monday by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Hulugho township, Garissa County.
Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo said the chief had long been a target of the militant group.
“Our officers are on the ground investigating the matter,” he said.
Without revealing further details, Mr Mwabudzo noted that the chief had been on the militants’ wanted list for a long time.
The attackers, who reportedly arrived in Hulugho at about 1am, began by attacking the local police station before proceeding to the chief’s residence.
“They blew up his vehicle in the compound using explosives,” said a resident who requested anonymity.
The teacher, identified as Stephen Musili, was shot dead as he attempted to flee.
“The attackers were clearly targeting the chief because from the police station they went straight to his house, only shooting the teacher in the process,” the source said.
Mr Byron Auma, a teacher in the area, described the incident as unfortunate, saying it had caused tension in local schools.
“We have gathered at Hulugho Police Station for safety. What happened is unfortunate and everyone is worried,” he said.
Al-Shabaab militants have frequently targeted chiefs in areas near the Kenya–Somalia border, accusing them of being government sympathisers.
Last year, the group abducted five chiefs in Mandera County and held them captive for about six months before releasing them.
