Kirinyaga County has set aside Sh90 million as bursary for the most needy school children in the area.

A credible team of officers will be put in place to identify deserving cases to ensure the bursary benefits only the needy children.

County Governor Joseph Ndathi said in the past bursaries went to the wrong people, leaving children from poor backgrounds suffering.

“As long as I am the governor of this county, never again will bursaries be awarded to children whose parents are capable of paying school fees,” he said yesterday at Kutus Town.

He emphasised that there would be transparency in awarding the bursaries and no deserving child would be discriminated against.

List to be open

Mr Ndathi announced that the list of children identified would be displayed at the devolved government offices, churches and other public institutions “for everyone to see.”

The governor observed that the county was an academic giant and he would hate to see any student dropping out due to lack of school fees.

The Governor said he was impressed by the excellent performance of the county in the last year’s KCPE examination.
“My county was ranked position one and I’m a very happy Governor,” he said.

Mr Ndathi also said his government would invest heavily in the Early Childhood Development Education adding that plans were underway to employ more than 400 nursery school teachers.

The county boss told political leaders to stop wrangling and continue initiating development projects which can benefit those who elected them.

Mr Ndathi it was time to deliver quality services to the people and leaders should stop infighting which is retrogressive.

He said some politicians had started campaigning for the gubernatorial seat but reminded them that the position was not vacant.

“My term is not yet over and those campaigning should wait until 2017.It is too early for them to start wasting time and resources.

I would like to tell them that I will be the Governor of this county for ten years,” he said.

Mr Ndathi said he was not a coward and he will defend his seat in the next General Election and told his political foes to brace themselves for a bruising battle.
