Death over Sh60: Kirinyaga woman arrested for stabbing lover in Christmas Day beer brawl
A Christmas Day outing turned fatal when 52-year-old Peter Mwangi was stabbed in the chest after refusing to pay a Sh60 beer bill for his girlfriend, claiming he was out of cash.
Police in Kirinyaga have arrested a woman accused of stabbing her partner to death over a 60-shilling beer bill.
She was tracked down on Saturday and taken to Baricho police station for questioning.
The police said that the woman will face a murder charge once the detectives have finished their investigation.
Peter Mwangi, 52, died from his injuries at the bar on Christmas Day after being stabbed in the chest.
According to witnesses, Mwangi arrived at the bar with his girlfriend, ordered their favourite beers and enjoyed them until it was time to pay the bill.
The woman then asked her lover to pay for her Sh60 drink. However, Mwangi refused, claiming that he didn't have any money.
This angered the assailant, who allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Mwangi in the chest, causing him to fall to the floor.
There was a commotion as shocked revellers hurriedly left the bar, leaving Mwangi to bleed to death.
After the fatal attack, the woman fled to an unknown destination, leaving her lover lying on the floor.
"I saw the furious woman stab her lover before she took off. Earlier I had tried to restrain the assailant from attacking her lover in vain," said Ms Flourence Mureithi.
The family of the deceased are now reeling in shock following his death.
"I was with my colleagues feasting when I was informed that my brother had been killed in a bar brawl. I abandoned what I was doing and rushed to the scene, only to find him lying in a pool of blood," said Mr Robert Wanyeki.
The family said that the woman had committed a very serious crime and should not go unpunished.
"We demand that legal action be taken against the assailant, " said Mr Kaburu Gatimu, the cousin to the deceased.
Kirinyaga West Sub-county Police Commander Mr Josh Mudavadi said the woman will face the full force of the law.
"We have apprehended the suspect and further investigations are underway. If she’s responsible she will be taken to court to face murder charges," he said.
The body was moved to Kerugoya referral hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination.
