Three people were killed and five others seriously injured in separate road accidents in Kirinyaga County.

The survivors were rushed to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

In the first accident, two boda-boda riders died on the spot after they were hit by a car in Nyangati Village.

The riders were heading towards Kutus from Ngurubani town along the Embu-Makutano road when the car hit them from behind.

On the same road, five people suffered head, chest, hand and leg injuries after a matatu they were travelling in rolled and landed in a ditch.

The injured were trapped in the mangled vehicle but were rescued by residents and police and rushed to hospital.

And in Mutithi, a woman died after being hit by a lorry.

Mwea East Deputy Police Commander Lucas Chebet said all the drivers of the vehicles involved in the crashes were arrested for questioning.

He said the drivers will be charged with careless driving once police are through with investigations.

Mr Chebet warned that drivers who do not observe traffic rules will not be spared.

"Drivers plying local routes are flouting traffic rules and we shall ruthlessly deal with them," he warned.
