A tycoon's son has been arrested in connection with the murder of a young woman whose body was found dumped in a septic tank in Ngurubani town, Kirinyaga County.

Acting on a tip-off, detectives flushed out the suspect from his hideout in Mwariko area of Mwea Constituency on Friday afternoon and took him to Wang'uru Police Station for questioning.

Gruesome discovery

The woman, who is yet to be identified, was discovered last Saturday by a worker cleaning a toilet at a hotel in the town.

It is suspected that the woman was strangled and thrown into the septic tank in an attempt to cover up the evidence.

Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Mohammed Jarso said the suspect, a university dropout, will be charged with murder once detectives complete their investigations.

"This is a very serious crime and the main suspect will be charged with murder," Mr Jarso said.

Police said detectives wanted to establish the motive for the heinous act and where the woman lived.

The tycoon father of the suspect has already recorded a statement and is assisting police with the investigation.

He was summoned by detectives to the Wang'uru police station immediately after the woman's body was recovered.

He was questioned for several hours and later released.

Three of the businessman's employees and his wife also gave statements to the police and have since been released.

Key suspect

It is believed that the suspect met the woman in a local bar where they drank together.

After drinking, the suspect is said to have taken the woman home.

Her body was later found in a septic tank.

Investigators believe the suspect fatally attacked the woman in his home during the night, dragged her body out, dumped it in the septic tank and fled.

Preliminary investigations suggest there may have been a struggle between the suspect and the woman before he allegedly killed her and tried to cover up the crime.
