What you need to know:

  • Nyanza regional traffic boss Peter Maina said the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a culvert.

Four people were killed and a passenger seriously injured in a road accident at Awasi along the Kisumu-Kericho highway on Friday.

Nyanza regional traffic boss Peter Maina said the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a culvert.

"Those who died are the driver, a female and two male passengers," Mr Maina said.

The surviving passenger, a 29-year-old man, was rushed to Awasi Catholic Dispensary and later transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu City for further treatment.

The four bodies were taken to Othoo Private Mortuary in Nyando sub-county, awaiting a post-mortem.

The regional traffic boss has warned motorists against speeding.

Mr Maina said most of the road accidents reported in the region were as a result of careless driving, fatigued drivers and poorly maintained vehicles.

"We have deployed our officers on the road to identify the careless drivers and poorly maintained vehicles to reduce road accidents," he said.
