Six people died on the spot Friday night when the matatu they were travelling in collided with a bus near the Konza City along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway in the latest accident along the road.

Seven others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Machakos County Referral Hospital.

Witnesses said the matatu managed by Naekana Sacco was heading towards Mombasa while the bus owned by Tahmeed bus company was heading towards Nairobi when the accident occurred.

“The matatu was attempting to overtake a lorry when it collided head on with the bus,” Mukaa Subcounty Police Commander Hussein Abduba told the Nation in an interview.

The bodies were taken to the Machakos County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The accident sparked a heavy traffic jam on the busy road which lasted for hours. Mr Abduba urged motorists to be extra careful during this time families are returning from holidays.
