Puzzle of explosives planted under bridge in Migori
Security officers from the bomb squad at the scene where a bomb was discovered under a bridge on River Kuja, Nyatike, in Migori County on December 16, 2025.
Bomb disposal experts on Tuesday defused explosives that had been planted beneath a bridge in Nyatike, Migori County.
Police were alerted by reports that unknown individuals had placed explosives under a bridge linking Suna West and Nyatike sub-counties. Lacking the technical expertise to handle the threat, officers at the scene immediately contacted the bomb squad, which successfully removed the devices before they could detonate.
A team from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) has been deployed to investigate the incident.
Nyatike Sub-County Police Commander Londo Juma said the alarm was initially raised by a concerned member of the public who noticed red wire at the bridge.
“The caller told us that red wire was coming out of the ground,” Mr Juma said.
Police officers sent to the scene confirmed the presence of suspicious wiring. Given that the region is known for gold mining, where some mineworkers use explosives to break ground, security officers opted to involve specialists to determine the nature of the device.
“We had to call bomb disposal experts to remove the wire and check its connections. Upon examination, they confirmed that explosives had indeed been planted there,” Mr Juma said.
They were safely removed after police temporarily blocked movement across the bridge. No injuries were reported during the operation.
Investigation
An investigation has been launched to establish who planted the devices.
“They were placed there with malicious intent. They were meant to harm people. We are calling on members of the public to cooperate with us so that we can take necessary action,” he said.
President William Ruto is expected to visit Migori County on Wednesday to participate in the Piny Luo Festivals. The celebrations will be held at various venues, including Rongo University grounds.
According to the programme, the Head of State will witness boat racing, wrestling and other traditional Luo cultural practices, including Tero Buru, at Saye Beach. He is also scheduled to visit the ThimLich Ohinga historical site in Kadem before proceeding to Rongo University.
