What you need to know:

  • Governors Joho (Mombasa), Kingi (Kilifi) and Timammy (Lamu) said any elected leader who is opposed to the commonwealth of coast counties should be prepared to face the electorate.
  • Mr Joho told the gathering that those opposed to the union would lose their seats come the 2017 General Election.
  • Similar sentiments were shared by Mr Kingi and Mr Timammy, who joined Mr Joho to clear the air that Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani is not a political party.
  • The sole goal of the leaders is to empower the people of Coast, he added.

Coast leaders spearheading establishment of Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani Sunday warned their colleagues opposed to the idea to prepare for battle.

Addressing the first rally of the union on Lamu Island, Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Amason Kingi (Kilifi) and Issa Timammy (Lamu) said any elected leader who is opposed to the commonwealth of coast counties should be prepared to face the electorate.

Mr Joho told the gathering that those opposed to the union would lose their seats come the 2017 General Election.

“We shall face them and find alternatives in their constituencies so that we can find leaders who are willing to drive the economic agenda of the region. We will not be begging you, we need responsible and honest leaders in this region,” added Mr Joho.

WORKING WITH OUTSIDERS

The Mombasa governor claimed those opposed to Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani were working with “outsiders”.

“If you have been sent by outsiders to wreak havoc, we shall deal with you head on. We will name and shame them.

"They have no development agenda for the region. They have been promised goodies and offered mega tenders to undermine the unity of Coastal people,” he added.

Similar sentiments were shared by Mr Kingi and Mr Timammy, who joined Mr Joho to clear the air that Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani is not a political party but a vehicle for viable transformation of the region.

“This is not a political party. It is a tool for economic transformation.

Whereas a political party is vehicle to help leaders ascend to power, Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani is a tool we will use it to bring food on the table of coastal people,” said Mr Kingi.

The sole goal of the leaders is to empower the people of Coast, he added.
