And when the convoy of political leaders arrived at Ngonda shopping center, the police officers started firing teargas as the goons hurled stones.

The convoy was led by Senators Joe Nyutu (Murang'a), Karungo Thang'wa (Kiambu) and John Methu (Nyandarua), who are all allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Members of Parliament Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), John Kaguchia (Mukurweini), Robert Mbui (Kathiani) as well as Kanyenya-ini MCA Grace Nduta were also in the convoy.

Others political leaders in the convoy included Senators Dan Maanzo (Makueni), Enoch Wambua (Kitui) and Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), Richard Onyonka (Kisii), former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka, politician Omingo Magara and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru.

Arrest and arraignment

Mr Methu termed the attack as attempted assassination on particular members of the Opposition alliance.

“I feel sorry for myself that I was part of handing over this country to a presidential accident in the 2022 General Election,” he said.

Similarly, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i both condemned the incident.

“This is a government that has reached its end of the tether. It can only reason through brute force. I condemn in totality the use of goons to help police fight democracy and overthrow our constitution,” Mr Musyoka told the Daily Nation on Sunday.

“It is only a matter of time and this country will be in the hands of serious people who will be accountable for every act about dealing with sovereign power,” Dr Matiang'i said.

Mr Gachagua, who is currently on a tour of the US, in a statement termed the incident as “barbaric.”

“I have learnt of the unfortunate event at Ngonda Shopping Center, in Murang’a where state-sponsored militia, accompanied by the rogue police officers, have violently beaten wananchi and leaders after a church service,” Gachagua said.

“This is barbaric, dictatorial, and violence against the very soul of our nation, which is our constitution. Mr President, what do you gain through deaths and bloodshed? For how long will you repress the people of Kenya and mutilate our constitution? Do you think Kenyans will love you by force and through intimidation?” the former Deputy President added.

Mr Gachagua called for immediate arrest and arraignment of the goons and police officers who were involved in the incident.

“I want to remind the police officers being misused that justice will be served, no matter how long it takes,” he said.

After navigating through the mayhem, the politicians called addressed the media in Thika Town where they announced that they had recorded a police statement regarding the attack.

“We have secured OB Number 03/27/07/25 of 6:16pm at Gachocho Police Post, narration being attack by police officers and goons where we incurred injuries, loss of properties and damage of our vehicles,” Mr Njiru said.
