Dr Mutiso murder: Tenth suspect arrested, charged over Nairobi killing

Another suspect in the brutal murder of clinical psychiatrist Dr Victoria Mutiso has been arrested and charged, bringing to 10 the number of people facing charges in connection with the killing.
Maritim Kimutai, alias Kim, was physically presented before the Milimani High Court and returned to prison until September 29, 2026, when he will be jointly charged with the other suspects.
Others in custody over Dr Mutiso’s death are her former co-wife, Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa, both advocates, police constables Elijah Kimoi and Collins Kiplagat Bett, Pius Muiru Mbugua, alias Head Boy, Samuel Karanja Gathoni (Wakili), law student Daniel Mwangi Njoroge, Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia and Kimutai.
When the case came up virtually on September 23, 2026 for plea-taking before Justice Alexander Muteti, Rose and her daughter Angela, declined to virtually plead to the murder charge, a prison officer told the court.
“My lord, the two have refused to appear before court virtually,” the officer told the judge.
Justice Muteti said there was an order by Justice Kanyi Kimondo requiring the suspects to appear virtually and noted that they had no right to refuse to appear before the court.
Defence lawyer Danstan Omari apologised to the court for his clients’ conduct.
Prosecuting counsel Jalson Makori told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions would apply to have all the files in the matter consolidated.
Mr Makori said the DPP would seek an order to consolidate the case against PC Kimoi with that of Rose Mbithe, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa.
Lead investigator Corporal Romana Oduor is compiling the committal bundles for all the suspects arrested in connection with Dr Mutiso’s murder on July 29, 2026, along Mawensi Road, to enable the DPP to commence the trial.
Dr Victoria Mutiso, a clinical psychologist who was gunned down in Nairobi. Preliminary findings indicate that she may have been followed from her home.
On August 27, 2026, Justice Kanyi Kimondo directed that all those linked to Dr Mutiso’s murder be subjected to mental assessment at Mbagathi Hospital or any other facility offering the service within Nairobi, to establish whether they are fit to stand trial.
Following the order, the court deferred plea-taking to September 23, 2026, before Justice Muteti.
Justice Muteti has now deferred plea-taking to September 29, 2026, at noon and ordered all the suspects to be physically produced in court.
He also ordered that Mr Kimutai be detained at Industrial Area Remand Prison until September 29, when he will be arraigned for plea-taking.
Justice Kimondo had barred the suspects from commenting on the case until they undergo mental assessment to determine whether they are fit to plead to the charge.
“This Court has been informed that a charge of murder has been preferred against the suspects. They are hereby, however, required not to make any comment in respect of the case before mental assessment at Mbagathi or any other hospital within Nairobi County,” Justice Kimondo directed.
According to the DPP, on July 29, 2026, at about 9.30am along Mawensi Road in Kilimani Sub-County, Rose and her two children, together with others not before the court, murdered Dr Mutiso.
Meanwhile, three key suspects who had fled the country were deported from Uganda after being convicted by a Ugandan court of being in the country illegally.
The fugitives PC Bett, Mr Mbugua and Mr Gathoni are undergoing interrogation by the homicide investigations bureau at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
They were convicted by the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Buganda Road in Kampala on August 31, 2026, before being handed over to Interpol, which subsequently handed them over to Kenyan police at the Malaba border on September 1.
They were produced in court seven days after Rose Mbithe Mulwa, alias Rose Mbithe Ndetei, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa, both advocates, and PC Elijah Kimoi were charged with murder before Justice Kanyi Kimondo and remanded until September 23, 2026.
Angela Mulwa was separately charged on September 2, 2026, at the Mavoko Law Courts in Machakos County over the alleged theft of motor vehicles from the residence of the slain doctor at Mlolongo.
She had been arrested alongside Nelson Masiga Makaralu last month as police investigated the alleged theft of Dr Mutiso’s top-of-the-range vehicles, forgery of title documents and malicious damage to property during the eviction of the deceased from the Sh1.5 billion, 20-acre Mlolongo property.
