The County Assembly of Nairobi has tabled a motion seeking to push City Hall to rename one of the city's major roads in honour of Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, who died in April this year.
He passed away at the age of 84, marking the end of his monumental career in both the legal sector and human rights.
Waithera Chege, the Nairobi South Member of the County Assembly who sponsored the motion, said the late lawyer played a critical role in the country's history and therefore deserves the honour in recognition of his achievements.
While tabling the motion on Tuesday, the MCA, who also serves as Deputy Minority Leader, said that Mr Nowrojee was a patriotic man of letters who made a huge contribution to the nation through his dedicated service to justice.
“He often offered his services pro bono whenever the occasions so required. He believed in the sanctity of the Constitution, even in the most turbulent political climate,” Ms Waithera said.
She noted that her notice of motion is in line with the county policy on property addressing and street naming, which provides the procedures to be undertaken.
“Naming a prominent road in Nairobi after him would serve as a fitting tribute to his lasting legacy...his contributions will be remembered and celebrated by future generations. This assembly therefore urges the County Executive to rename a county road after the late Pheroze Nowrojee,” Ms Waithera said.
The Nairobi City County Property Addressing and Street Naming Policy of 2021 provides a framework for renaming streets or roads.
The process starts with a motion from the County Assembly. It must then be approved by the County Assembly and thereafter be communicated to the County Executive, who would implement the matter.
According to the policy, the County Executive under Governor Johnson Sakaja would implement the matter within three months of receiving communication from the Assembly.
In 2021, the policy was applied to rename Mbagathi Way to Raila Odinga Way in recognition of the ODM leader's contributions to the country.
