Nairobi County defies court order to demolish historic Uhuru Market
Traders at Uhuru Market on Jogoo Road in Nairobi say that they have suffered heavy losses and, in some cases, have gone to bed hungry as a result of the demolitions that took place on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Many of them say they have been operating in this market for years, some for as long as seven years, and claim that they cannot take their businesses anywhere else.
They also maintain that there is a court order that had halted the demolitions expected to be mentioned on March 24, 2026, which they claim was ignored when the exercise was carried out.
At the moment, a fence is placed around the area to restrict access.
According to the traders, the county government plans to redevelop the site into a modern market facility, replacing the temporary stalls that previously stood here.
