Nakuru County is rehabilitating eight key roads in a major plan to improve accessibility to markets.
As the county prepares for a city status charter, Governor Lee Kinyanjui is keen on improving transport infrastructure in the vast region by embarking on the improvement of major roads.
In partnership with the national government, the county seeks to rehabilitate the roads connecting farmers in the agricultural areas of Njoro, Molo, Bahati, Rongai and Subukia to the markets in Nakuru town.
According to Mr Kinyanjui, the move is a product of intense lobbying by the county government in collaboration with the national government for better services.
Among the roads whose tenders have been awarded to a contractor include Kiambiria-Kuresoi-Chepsir road. The contractor should be on site in three weeks’ time.
Others include Maela-Kongoni, Kiti-Murunyu-Githioro and Njoro-Nessuit roads.
Transform region
The Simboyon-Kanyotu, Gwa Kiongo-Gituamba-Kabazi, Mercy Njeri-Mang’u and Maili Sita-Kabatini roads have also been budgeted for.
Governor Kinyanjui noted that once complete, the roads will significantly transform the region especially on access to markets.
“Collaboration between the county and the national government is key in ensuring delivery of service to our people,” said the governor.
Mr Kinyanjui further revealed that the tender for the upgrade of the Lanet airstrip to an airport has already been awarded to a contractor.
This, he said, will be a game changer in the region's tourism and commercial activities.
