Detectives are holding a woman, for staging her own abduction to escape from her Nairobi ‘boyfriend’ and reunite with her husband of six years in Narok County.
The suspect has allegedly confessed to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that she lied to her city boyfriend that she had been abducted so that she could reunite with the father of her two children in Oldonyo Orok.
She arrived in Nairobi more than one year ago to look for employment and after some time, she met her boyfriend who took her in as his wife and they started cohabiting in a rented house in the Kitisuru area.
The two lived happily until November 9, 2024, when the woman went missing.
Her boyfriend reported to Kitisuru Police Station that his lover had been kidnapped by unknown assailants who lured her with a job offer and were demanding a Sh150,000 ransom.
This was the information she had received from his distressed girlfriend, police told the Nation on Sunday.
Investigations led to the arrest of one suspect on November 13 in Gitaru area, after his mobile phone was linked to the ransom demand. Upon further investigation, authorities established that the man in their custody was not involved.
However, on November 16, the woman was tracked down to her husband's house in Narok, days after her boyfriend in Kitisuru reported her missing.
According to investigators, a further probe led detectives to Oldonyo Orok in Narok South, where they found the woman at her husband's house.
“On November 16, 2024, the team proceeded to Oldonyo Orok, Narok South, where the victim's number was lastly located, and found her at her husband’s house,” a statement by DCI Mohamed Amin reads.
"In her Narok home, they found her safe and sound, accompanied by two young girls," further reads the statement.
Detectives say the woman confessed to staging the abduction to reunite with her husband.
"Upon investigations, it became evident that (the man of the house) was, in fact, her husband. The couple has been married for six years and have a five-year-old daughter," revealed a senior detective.
"We uncovered a tangled web of infidelity. It was revealed that (the Nairobi boyfriend) had been having an affair with the woman, who had travelled to Nairobi in search of employment. However, she decided to end her relationship with the boyfriend to reunite with the husband," added the detective.
Investigators also said the mother of two may have staged her abduction in a bid to extort money from her lover in Nairobi.
Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, in collaboration with the Operations Support Unit, at the weekend arrested both the woman and her Nairobi boyfriend over the fraudulent kidnapping report.
On Sunday, the two were being held in Kitisuru Nairobi for further interrogation.
They could face serious charges related to providing false information to law enforcement, an offence under Section 129 of the Penal Code.
Earlier in November, the woman’s story went viral after her husband was interviewed on Citizen TV, where he gave an account of how his lover was lured by one phone call before she went missing.
The man unknowingly made the story more believable through his active search for his ‘missing’ wife.
He claimed his 'wife' left Nairobi on November 4 to answer to a job opportunity, but had been missing since after allegedly getting picked up by individuals aboard a Toyota Probox car.
"At 3pm, I got a missed call from a new number. I called back and she told me they had put her in a Probox and were around Maasai Mara. She was crying. Then someone took the phone and instructed me to send Sh150,000, or they would kill her," he narrated.
The case drew attention with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau stepping in to help rescue the kidnapped victim.
