Five people died while three others sustained serious injuries on Monday following a road crash that happened in Sapache, Samburu County along the Isiolo-Marsabit highway.

According to police, the accident happened after the Toyota Land Cruiser had a tyre burst and hit a Range Rover V8 head on.

The five died on the spot as others were thrown out of the vehicles due to the impact, according to Samburu East Sub-County Deputy Police Commander Juma Ombata who confirmed the incident.

"All the five in the vehicle died instantly, but we managed to save three who are in critical condition. They have been taken to the Archers Post Health Centre," Mr Ombata told the Nation.

"We are on a rescue mission and moving survivors to Achers hospital," he added.

Mr Ombata revealed that among those critically injured, some had multiple fractures while others had external bleeding.

According to Peter Lekenit, an eye witness, the Toyota Land Cruiser was moving at a relatively low speed but the driver lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst.

The police commander said the bodies of those who died were taken to Wamba Sub-County mortuary while the vehicles were towed to Wamba Police Station.
