Ayieko murder: Sixth suspect arrested as burial approaches
The sixth suspect in the murder of Wells Fargo human resources manager Willis Ayieko was arrested on Friday at his hideout in Bondo, Siaya County.
Mr Duncan Onyango, alias Otuch, was flushed out of his hideout by police and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who had been pursuing him.
According to police, Mr Onyango, 48, was placed at the scene of the murder on the day Mr Ayieko went missing.
“The said suspect has been placed at the scene of the gruesome murder of one Willis Ayieko Onyango, whose lifeless body was discovered having been dumped at Mungowere stream on October 23, less than 400 metres from the suspect’s house,” read a police incident report seen by the Nation.
Police also reported that Mr Onyango’s house was used to torture Mr Ayieko, whose partially decomposed body was dumped at Mungowere stream on the Siaya-Kakamega border.
“The DCI teams conducted a scene re-enactment exercise with one of the previously arrested suspects who was able to identify the house of Duncan Onyango as the place where the victim was tortured and murdered,” the report added.
The house is located in Luanda Doho in Kisa West, Kakamega County.
The late Ayieko went missing after attending a funeral in Gem.
His vehicle, a Ford Ranger double-cabin pick-up, was discovered abandoned at a petrol station in Vihiga County, several kilometres from where his body was found. CCTV footage from the petrol station showed two men parking the vehicle before fleeing the scene. Police and the DCI are currently looking for two men who were seen getting out of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, preparations for Mr Ayieko's funeral are underway in his home village of Uhuru-Wuoroya, with the body expected to be brought from Nairobi on Friday for an overnight vigil before the burial on Saturday.
The family continues to demand justice and has called on security agencies to leave no stone unturned.
The funeral service for the deceased was held at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on Friday, where leaders described the late Mr Ayieko as a man who went out of his way to help people.
Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi described the deceased as a gentleman who was a great asset to the community.
“He was a gentleman. We know the greatness of someone with the impact he has created in his community. This is a big loss to Alego Usonga, Siaya and the nation as a whole. I call upon the security agencies to establish the motive behind the murder of Mr Ayieko,” he said at the service.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi who echoed his sentiments.
“Let us dig deep and find out the people behind this, and I believe the government will get to the bottom of this,” he said.
Mr Ayieko’s widow, Esther Wagumba, described the slain HR boss as “a man who delighted in seeing those around him grow”.
