Ten people who had been isolated for Ebola monitoring at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret have tested negative for the virus and been discharged. Among those cleared is a Ministry of Health person of interest who travelled on the same flight as a confirmed Ebola patient.

MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr Philip Kirwa confirmed the discharges on Wednesday while briefing the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Health, which was touring the facility to assess the use of public funds and progress on infrastructure projects.

“We had 10 people isolated here for Ebola monitoring, and all of them have been released after testing negative,” Dr Kirwa said.

He assured the committee that the hospital was prepared to handle potential outbreaks, citing its 30-bed isolation unit, established through a partnership with the World Bank.

The parliamentary delegation, led by acting chairperson Julius Sunkuli, was on a nationwide oversight tour of Level Six hospitals and projects under construction to assess how public funds had been used.

“We are touring all Level Six hospitals across the country. Today, we are here in Eldoret, and we will be proceeding to Kisumu for the same mission,” Mr Sunkuli said. “We want to ascertain if all public facilities have utilised funds well.”

The committee commended MTRH management for what it described as the prudent use of funds allocated by Parliament.

The delegation included MPs Anthony Kibagendi, Titus Khamala, Joshua Oron, Pauline Lenguris and Mary Maingi.

During the visit, the legislators also inspected the ongoing construction of a new referral hospital facility in the Kiplombe area of Eldoret City.
