Has God called you to marriage or to celibacy?
Whether God calls you to marriage or to celibacy, remember that, within those general boundaries, there are different paths depending on different circumstances
Somebody once told me that the secret of spiritual life consists in discovering the path God wants you to follow. This means three things.
Your path will be different from the ones other people are called to follow. God will show you what your path is supposed to be. If you follow it, you will get to know Jesus.
For most people, the path God wants them to follow has something to do with getting married. For a few like myself, God wanted me to take to heart those shocking words Jesus once addressed to his disciples (Mt 19:12): “There are eunuchs born so from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs made so by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.”
Whether God calls you to marriage or to celibacy, remember that, within those general boundaries, there are different paths depending on different circumstances. If married you may have no children, few children or many children; your spouse may be healthy or bed-ridden; and your in-laws may be supportive or a crown of thorns.
Don’t waste time with wishful thinking, complaining to yourself: If only I had a better spouse... If only my children were getting As instead of Ds... If only my parents were wealthy instead of poor... Your path to heaven is not some idealistic future where everything works the way you think it should be. You path to heaven is defined by what is right in front of you. That is where God is waiting for you.
