For Generation Z, holidays are more than just breaks from school or work. They’re an opportunity to create memories, explore passions, and connect with loved ones—or even themselves.

Whether it's celebrating with family, traveling to a dream destination, or volunteering for a cause they care about, these moments often leave a lasting impact.

But what makes a holiday truly unforgettable? Is it the people they share it with, the unique traditions, or the unexpected moments of joy? For some, it might be the thrill of adventure—trying something new, taking risks, or visiting a place they’ve always wanted to see. For others, it’s the quiet, meaningful connections: a deep conversation with a loved one, a moment of self-discovery, or the chance to make someone else smile.

As we approach the end of the year, Gen Z reflects on the holidays they’ll always cherish. From cozy family gatherings filled with laughter to daring solo adventures that pushed them out of their comfort zones, their stories reveal a generation that values authenticity, shared experiences, and the power of hope. They embrace holidays not just as a time to unwind but as a chance to grow, give back, and leave a positive mark on the world.

But the season isn’t just about looking back. With 2024 around the corner, what dreams and plans are they holding close? What do they hope to experience, change, or create in the year ahead?

This story dives into their hearts, exploring their treasured memories and aspirations. Let their stories inspire you to reflect on your own unforgettable moments and the dreams you carry for the year ahead—a reminder that holidays are more than celebrations; they are opportunities to connect, grow, and dream.

Last Christmas was unforgettable—I spent it in Obergurgl, Austria, experiencing a European winter for the very first time. Everything about it felt magical, from the snowy landscapes to the festive atmosphere. Watching snow fall was surreal, and skiing on the Alps was both challenging and thrilling. Sharing these special moments with my husband made it even more meaningful. We spent Christmas Eve sipping hot chocolate by a cozy fireplace, watching the snow fall outside. It felt like a scene from a holiday movie.

In previous years, my holidays were completely different. The year before, I celebrated Christmas in Dubai, where everything was extravagant. The malls were adorned with over-the-top decorations, and there were Santas entertaining families everywhere. Austria, on the other hand, offered a quieter, more traditional holiday experience. Each year, I look forward to exploring a new destination, finding joy in both adventure and diversity. This Christmas, I’m considering a tropical getaway to Seychelles or Bali—something entirely different from snow-covered mountains.

Traditionally, I used to celebrate Christmas with family in Kenya, and I’ve now reserved that for New Year’s. Those gatherings always bring warmth and connection, but I’ve embraced the idea of making new holiday traditions, such as discovering new places and trying new things.

Holidays are more than just breaks; they’re opportunities to recharge, reflect, and reconnect. They hold a universal significance, as people across the world pause to celebrate in their own unique ways. For me, they’ve become moments of gratitude, personal growth, and shared happiness.

This year, I’m excited to celebrate my baby’s first Christmas. I plan to make it meaningful by focusing on family bonding, creating special memories and expressing gratitude for a beautiful year. My dream holiday would be where everyone gets to experience their own version of happiness—reuniting with loved ones, achieving milestones, or simply finding peace. Spending it with my grandmother at her place, surrounded by extended family, would be perfect. Holidays remind us of what truly matters: connection, joy, and celebrating dreams coming true.

The holiday I’ll never forget was a magical Christmas trip to Diani when I was 10. It was a shared adventure between my family and my best friend’s family, and it marked the beginning of an extraordinary friendship. We spent our days swimming in the ocean, exploring Mombasa, and savouring breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. One unforgettable moment was playing a doll game with my best friend—a simple joy that still warms my heart.

What made it truly special was being surrounded by the people I love most. It was a holiday of many "firsts," filled with laughter, love, and the festive spirit of Christmas, which is my favourite time of year.

Holidays have always held a special place in my life. My family’s traditions, like cooking together, road trips, and cosy movie nights, make every holiday season meaningful. That Diani trip was new and adventurous—we walked miles exploring and enjoyed ferry rides, experiences that deepened my appreciation for shared moments and simple pleasures.

Looking back, it taught me the value of being present and cherishing time with loved ones. Holidays aren’t just breaks; they’re opportunities to connect, reflect, and celebrate life. This year, I hope to make the season meaningful by spending quality time with family—cooking, watching movies, and honouring Christmas as a celebration of Christ’s birth and love for humanity.

If I could design my perfect holiday, it would be in a tropical paradise like Zanzibar or Seychelles, surrounded by family and close friends. There’d be ocean swims, delicious food, and sunsets to savour. Holidays remind us to pause, reconnect, and celebrate what truly matters: love, memories, and faith.

My most unforgettable holiday was my first trip to Mombasa. The moment I arrived, I felt the dramatic shift in temperature and humidity—it’s always the first sign that I’ve reached the coast. We stayed at a hotel that introduced me to the warmth of coastal hospitality through incredible food. Although I’m still hesitant about seafood, I took a bold step and tried shrimp for the first time! Another memory that stands out is encountering a massive millipede—everything in Mombasa, from insects to cats and birds, feels larger than life.

The trip opened my eyes to a different side of Kenya. My first encounter with the ocean’s salty water was unforgettable. The waves were thrilling, often turning swimming into an adventure. I discovered the joy of madafu (young coconut) and coastal treats like achari and cassava crisps.

What struck me most was the laid-back Swahili culture. No one is in a hurry. The relaxed vibe, soothing accents, and overall atmosphere brought a peace I hadn’t experienced before. Food became my gateway to this culture—affordable and delicious Swahili dishes, along with what I still consider the best Debonairs pizza in Kenya. It taught me to appreciate different paces of life and how food reflects a place’s soul.

For future visits, I dream of exploring more of Diani Beach, coastal cuisines like pilau and biryani, and maybe trying more seafood (no promises though!). I’d love to deepen my understanding of Swahili culture and language. The coast’s unique blend of natural beauty, culinary adventures, and cultural richness has left a lasting mark on my heart—it’s a place I’ll always want to return to.

Last Christmas, I discovered the true meaning of the holidays. I stepped away from the usual festivities to try something different, and it turned into an experience I’ll never forget. Alongside my friends, I decided to spend the day at a children’s home. It wasn’t something I had ever done before, so I approached it with a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and laughter. We played games, shared meals, and distributed small gifts we had brought. But what struck me most was the genuine joy on the children’s faces. They weren’t just thrilled by the presents—they were overjoyed to have someone spend time with them.

One little boy tugged at my heart when he said he wanted to be like me when he grew up. That moment changed everything. It reminded me that holidays aren’t just about rest or fun but about creating meaningful connections and making a difference in someone’s life.

That day shifted my perspective. I realised the holidays are a perfect opportunity to spread love and leave a lasting impact, no matter how small. This year, I’m planning to do something similar—perhaps even start a tradition of giving back.

For me, a memorable holiday isn’t about the place or the extravagance—it’s about the lives you touch and the memories you create. Last Christmas was proof that the true spirit of the season lies in selflessness and community.

The most unforgettable holiday I’ve ever had was a trip to Cape Town, South Africa. The breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and thrilling adventures made it extraordinary. Cape Town offers a unique mix of nature, history, and adventure. From the majestic Table Mountain to stunning beaches and vibrant markets, every moment felt like something out of a postcard.

I travelled with my closest friends, whose adventurous spirits added so much fun to the experience. We encouraged each other to try new things, explored every corner, and shared endless laughs. One moment that stands out was paragliding off Signal Hill. The rush of adrenaline as I took off, combined with the breathtaking view of the city, ocean, and mountains, was surreal. My friends’ cheers made it even more special—pure freedom in the air.

Aside from paragliding, we explored Cape Point, visited Robben Island, and enjoyed wine tasting in Stellenbosch. It was a trip of discovery and stepping out of comfort zones. During the holiday, I felt exhilarated and carefree, and looking back, it fills me with gratitude. It taught me to embrace spontaneity, live in the moment, and nurture friendships through meaningful experiences.

This trip changed how I view holidays—they’re more than a break; they’re about discovery, connection, and creating lasting memories. For this year, I hope for a holiday just as exciting and meaningful. Whether traveling or staying close to home, I want to create cherished moments and give back through volunteering.

My dream holiday would be a mix of adventure and relaxation, perhaps returning to Cape Town to explore safaris and the Garden Route. Holidays are special because they allow us to recharge, connect, and celebrate life’s beauty.
