What you need to know:

  • The right kind of pressure applied to your hands or feet will leave your aching tired body feeling more relaxed

The increasing popularity of holistic therapies in beauty spas has seen a raised demand for reflexology.

This treatment is based on the concept that the body is divided into ten zones of energy, which can be manipulated by massage to relax the corresponding areas all over the body.

The Saturday Magazine beauty team paid a visit to the Body Evolution Spa and spoke to Winnie Taylor, a reflexologist.

She informed us that that once the reflex points on the hands or feet that correspond to internal organs elsewhere in the body are massaged, they stimulate these organs to help the body relax.

“A thorough hand and foot massage is a marvelous way of reviving a tired aching body. It works to release congestion in the body resulting from overwork, stress, and lack of sleep,” she adds.

Each session takes approximately 45 minutes. The massage may be gentle or deep, depending on how sensitive the reflexologist finds your feet. This treatment may be incorporated into a specialised manicure and pedicure to provide a complete foot, hand and leg rejuvenation. It is suitable for men, women, and children.

QUICK FIXES:

Reflexology in 5 minutes

Relieve aching feet by giving yourself a 5-minute reflexology session.

Locate the sensitive reflex points on your underfoot. Massaging your big toe also helps your head, while the outer side of your left foot represents your hips and lower back. Simply work these particular reflex points for one minute or so for each area.

Press the middle of your foot gently to obtain complete relief.

ASK IRENE:

Is it advisable to perform reflexology on an infant?

– Marie, Nairobi.

Infants respond very well to any form of massage. It helps to soothe and comfort them. When performing reflexology on an infant, make sure you do it very slowly and gently.
