Case against ‘fake’ officer derails again

The case against Mr Joshua Waiganjo, who is accused of being a police imposter, again failed to proceed on Wednesday after the transfer of the presiding magistrate.
Mr Clarence Otieno, who has been Nyeri principal magistrate, was transferred on Tuesday.
The case would have been heard for the first time on March 18 but Mr Waiganjo’s lawyers were absent.
He faces two charges of defrauding two people pretending he was a senior police officer capable of securing jobs for their sons in the police force.
Secure jobs
On Wednesday, Mr Waiganjo’s lawyer told the court that his client needed specialised medical care in Nairobi and appealed for his transfer from the Nyeri prison to the city.
Nyeri Chief Magistrate Wilbroda Juma however declined to order his transfer and fixed June 14 as the new hearing date.
Mr Waiganjo is accused of impersonating a senior superintendent of police attached to the GSU headquarters with intent to defraud Mr Daniel Gachanja.
The offence allegedly happened between August 6 and October 16 2008 in Nyeri.
