A Nairobi court has handed death sentences to four men convicted of violently robbing former Kabete MP George Muchai, his driver and two bodyguards in 2015, leading to their death. Their two female accomplices were sentenced to 10 years in prison each.

The death sentence against Eric Mungera Isabwa alias Chairman, Raphael Kimani Gachii alias Kim Butcher, Mustafa Kimani Anyoni alias Musto and Stephen Astiva Lipopo alias Chokore were handed down exactly 11 years and 39 days after the incident. A seventh suspect, Simon Wambugu, was acquitted.

While imposing the sentence, the trial magistrate ruled that “the four executed with utmost impunity the heinous crimes which included abduction and armed robbery.”

The magistrate said where a weapon is involved, the law is very clear: “a death sentence must be involved.”

In a sentence that was delivered virtually after 4pm on Thursday, the magistrate handed a 10 years jail term for two women accomplices who were convicted for being in possession firearms and ammunition.

The court directed the 10-year jail terms against Jane Wanjiru Kamau alias Shiro and Margaret Njeri Wachiuri run from the date they were detained in prison April 2015. The women shed tears when they heard they had already completed their jail terms.

They have spent 11 years in jail so they will be freed as they have spent one extra year.

The magistrate said the weapons used in the robbery will be forfeited to the State until the High Court murder case against the four is determined.
