A Kenyan caregiver found dead in the UK two months ago will finally be buried on Friday, bringing closure to a distraught family.
And the Kenyan community there is preparing to bid farewell to Irene Mbugua, a 46-year-old mother and mental health care worker, who died in Birmingham in June.
Tragedy struck in Winson Green on June 23 when Irene Mbugua’s life was cut short. David Walsh, one of her patients, was later arrested and charged with her murder at Birmingham Crown Court.
A post-mortem examination later revealed that Ms Mbugua, who had been working as a caregiver for Mr Walsh, died as a result of serious head and facial injuries.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was severe head and facial trauma, leading West Midlands Police to launch a murder investigation. Mr Walsh, who was arrested at the scene, is also charged with assaulting multiple police officers during his apprehension.
“Walsh, aged 34, was initially hospitalised for treatment and later charged with murder and assaulting several police officers,” a police report read.
Ms Mbugua had relocated to the United Kingdom in search of better opportunities and to provide for her family back home. She dedicated herself to the mental health care sector, a profession marked by long hours, emotional strain, and often little supervision, especially for those working in private homes or through agencies.
West Midlands Police say investigations into her tragic death are still underway. In the wake of her passing, the Kenyan community in the UK has come together to celebrate her life and legacy. A candlelight vigil will be held on Thursday, September 4, at 8pm, outside The Clock on Craven Road in Nottingham.
The vigil is expected to draw members of the diaspora from across the UK, reflecting both the love Irene inspired and the outrage sparked by the circumstances of her death.
Attendees are encouraged to wear white, and candles will be available for purchase, with proceeds contributing to funeral costs. The funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hucknall, Nottingham, beginning at 11am on Friday.
Burial will follow at Highwood Cemetery in Bulwell. Community leaders have invited members of the public to attend, describing the farewell as both a moment of remembrance and communal support.
In a statement following Ms Mbugua’s death, her family paid tribute to her saying, “It’s so sad that you were taken from us in such a cruel way. We are so lost without you, Mum. We pray for the grace to face each day. Your beautiful smile and hearty laughter will be missed. Please just remind us how to join the dots, because we don’t have a map yet. Rest easy; you will remain in our hearts forever.”
