Kenyan arrested in Australia over suspected murder of chef
Caleb Leriano who was found dead in a car in Morphett Vale, Australia. A fellow Kenyan has been arrested in relation to the incident.
Police in Australia have made a breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of Kenyan chef Caleb Leriano following the arrest of a suspect.
South Australia Police disclosed that 22-year-old Alan Kiplimo was arrested in Western Australia while attempting to flee.
He is being extradited to Adelaide, where he is expected to face a murder charge. Kiplimo will be taken to a watch house upon arrival before being formally charged and appearing in a magistrate’s court.
The body of 24-year-old Leriano was discovered inside a crashed car in Morphett Vale, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia.
Emergency responders attempted Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially believed to be a road accident, detectives later determined that Leriano’s injuries were inconsistent with a motor vehicle crash and were likely the result of an assault. This prompted a major crime investigation.
Investigators believe Leriano had driven his red BMW to the vicinity of Sapphire Reserve in the early hours of Wednesday for a planned meeting before he was attacked. The circumstances surrounding the meeting remain a central focus of the ongoing investigation.
Australian detectives reportedly used advanced technology and reviewed CCTV footage to track the suspect to Perth, leading to his arrest.
Leriano, a graduate of Kenya’s Utalii College, had migrated to Australia in 2025 to work as a chef, primarily in aged-care and disability support facilities. His death has shocked both local and diaspora Kenyan communities, with many mourning the loss of the young chef under mysterious circumstances.
