G4S staffer hands over Sh8.5m to stranger

Detectives have detained a G4S Security Services employee after yet another mysterious theft of millions of shillings that was being moved from Kisumu to their headquarters strong room in Nairobi.

The suspect was detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) police station after he went to report that he had mistakenly handed over Sh8.5 million to a non-employee after disembarking from a flight that had arrived from Kisumu on Monday morning.

G4S Security Services communication officer Mr Dan Okoth confirmed the incident but declined to give details.

This is the fifth such heist involving G4S with the total loss running to almost Sh500 million since late last year.

According to a preliminary report made at the Kenya Airports Police Unit (KAPU) CID office, a G4S employees based at Kisumu was assigned to transport the briefcase containing the money aboard a flight that departed from the lakeside town and arrived at the JKIA at about 10.15am.

The Kenya Airports Police Unit criminal investigation officer Mr Joseph Ngisa said they were interrogating the G4S employee who had travelled with the money.

“We have received a report about the loss by a G4S staff who had just arrived from Kisumu and claims to have mistakenly handed over the money to an unknown person in G4S uniform who then boarded a private car and drove away. We have recorded a statement from him and are investigating the circumstances under which the money disappeared,” Mr Ngisa said.
