Human face of police emerges amid fuel protests in Machakos

Amid the chaos of running battles and clouds of tear gas during protests over rising fuel prices in Machakos town on Monday, police officers came to the aid of a disabled man who had become caught up in the commotion.
Stranded in the central business district as protesters blocked roads and police dispersed crowds, the man was helped by officers who assisted him in boarding a boda boda to the hospital and paid his fare.
“I am paying your fare to the hospital. Board this boda,” the female officer told the man, who was using crutches. Her male colleagues helped him onto the motorcycle taxi.

This rare display of compassion stood out amidst the tension gripping the town during demonstrations organised by transport stakeholders to protest against the latest fuel price hikes.
Protesters barricaded sections of the Machakos–Kitui road, and riot police were deployed across the CBD to restore order and prevent the destruction of property.
At around 10:45 am, officers could be seen engaging with youths and pleading with them not to block roads or disrupt movement within the town.

Some boda boda riders joined the protests, although many operators continued to offer emergency services.
“We are taking care of the sick and other emergencies,” said one boda boda rider.
The unrest disrupted normal activities in the town, with schools closing after only a few pupils arrived. Teachers asked parents to collect their children amid growing fears over insecurity.
Businesses in the central business district (CBD) remained shut for most of the day as traders feared looting and destruction.
As the protests intensified, the police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse groups of youths, particularly in the Grogan area, where there were intense clashes.
Residents ran for safety amid scenes of panic and loud explosions from tear gas canisters.
One police officer was rushed to the hospital after a tear gas canister exploded in his hand just before he threw it at protesters.
