On June 25, 2024, thousands of young Kenyans did what few believed was possible: they forced the government to retreat on a major policy decision.
The storming of Parliament during nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024 marked the climax of Kenya's largest youth-led movement since independence and triggered political, social and governance changes whose effects continue to echo two years later.
Initially sparked by anger over new tax proposals, the movement transformed into a powerful national demand for transparency, responsible governance, economic justice and respect for constitutional rights.

The protests not only compelled President William Ruto to withdraw the Finance Bill but also set off a chain of events that reshaped the country's political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Political analysts, civil society leaders and activists now describe the movement as a defining moment comparable to the struggle for multiparty democracy in the 1990s and the constitutional reforms that culminated in the 2010 Constitution.
The most immediate and visible impact of the protests was the withdrawal of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
For the first time in Kenya's recent history, a sitting president abandoned a flagship government proposal after sustained public resistance.
The victory transformed public perception of citizen power and demonstrated that organised civic action could influence national policy.
The demonstrations, largely coordinated online and driven by young people unaffiliated with traditional political parties, forced government officials to reconsider both the content and process of policy-making.
The protests also precipitated one of the most dramatic government re-organisations in recent history.

The post-protest environment eventually produced the broad-based government arrangement between Kenya Kwanza and ODM part, then under the leadership of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, resulting in the appointment of key ODM figures to Cabinet positions.
The CS’s are; former ODM Deputy Party Leaders Hassan Joho who was appointed CS Mining, his counterpart Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), ex ODM National Chairperson John Mbadi (National Treasury), former Director of Political Affairs and then National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi as well as elections board member Ms Beatrice Askul, now the CS for East African Community.
The political realignment altered parliamentary dynamics and reshaped alliances that continue to influence national politics today.
Although the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was not directly linked to the Gen Z demonstrations, analysts note that the broad-based arrangement created conditions that facilitated the political shifts that followed, as ODM legislators ganged up with their UDA counterparts to leverage on their numbers and sent the ex-DP home, both in the National Assembly and the Senate.
The protests also intensified demands for accountability over deaths, injuries and human rights violations committed during demonstrations, dating back to 2017.
President Ruto has since received a report from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights outlining a framework for compensating victims of human rights abuses committed during protests between 2017 and 2025.
The report documented cases involving extra-judicial killings, torture, enforced disappearances, sexual violence, destruction of property and loss of livelihoods.
"A nation does not heal by choosing whose pain matters. It heals by acknowledging all suffering, pursuing justice for all and committing itself to doing better," President Ruto said while receiving the report.

In resolutions adopted by its National Executive Committee on Monday, acting Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo said the process should be conducted expeditiously and transparently.
“As the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) does its part in identifying the victims for compensation, the NEC has directed our Parliamentary Group through House Leadership to play an integral role in this process, which is done in accordance with the provisions of the law,” Ms Omanyo said.
Perhaps the most enduring legacy of June 25 was the emergence of Gen Z as a formidable political constituency.
“For decades, Kenya's politics revolved around ethnic kingpins, established parties and veteran politicians. The protests challenged that model,” argues advocate Chris Omore.
Without a recognised leader, party structure or financier, he says, young Kenyans organised nationwide demonstrations in more than 38 counties and successfully compelled government action.
"The younger generation intruded into the political space with an intensity previously unseen," he says. "This was a political accident with long-term consequences for governance in Kenya."
Today, nearly every major political formation is seeking to court Gen Z voters ahead of 2027.
Social media platforms such as X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Telegram became command centres for mobilisation, fundraising, civic education and fact-checking.
Complex legislative proposals were simplified and translated into local languages by ordinary citizens.
"One of the things that Kenyans realised is that they have the power," he says. "The June protests were a wake-up call for the entire country that all sovereign power belongs to the people."
According to him, the appetite for civic engagement has grown significantly since then. "Every Kenyan with access to information has become a civic educator."
Many officials initially dismissed concerns raised by young people, only to face an unprecedented backlash.
Since then, ministries, Parliament and state agencies have increasingly prioritised public engagement and consultations on contentious policies.
The events demonstrated the dangers of introducing major fiscal measures without securing public buy-in.
Issues such as taxation, public debt and government spending—which were previously viewed as technical subjects—have become mainstream political topics.

Beyond the Finance Bill itself, the protests exposed widespread frustration over economic hardships.
Rising taxes, unemployment, high food prices and concerns about public debt converged to create a national movement that transcended geography, ethnicity and political affiliation.
For the first time in years, economic issues rather than ethnic loyalties dominated political conversations.
The demonstrations attracted international attention and placed Kenya's governance record under global scrutiny.
International media extensively covered the protests, while human rights organisations raised concerns over police conduct, abductions and the use of force against demonstrators.
The uprising fundamentally changed public expectations of government accountability. Young voters increasingly demand transparency in public spending, procurement and borrowing. Questions about taxation, public debt, corruption and state expenditure now feature prominently in public discourse.
Human rights activist Bob Njagi believes that the movement transformed the role of civil society and activists.
"The protests have redefined activism," he says. "Activists have become the new opposition, holding the government accountable and demanding transparency."
Virtually every presidential hopeful, including the Gachagua-Kalonzo Musyoka-led United Opposition, as well as the Linda Mwananchi group steered by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is attempting to position themselves as the preferred candidate of young voters.
Mr Sifuna’s camp has since postponed Friday Kisii and Keroka rallies to July 3 to allow supporters to join June 25, 2024 protest commemorations.
“We will join other Kenyans of goodwill to stand in solidarity with the victims of the Gen-Z protests of 2024 and their families and in remembrance of those who were killed or have forcefully disappeared,” Mr Sifuna’s team said in a statement on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Mr Gachagua told Kenyans to stay away from the “streets, alleging “a plot to attack protesters.”
The debate over succession politics, governance reforms and economic transformation increasingly revolves around issues raised during the protests.
"Ignoring the youth will come at a great cost," warns Mr Omore.
Boniface Mwangi views this as the beginning of a broader civic awakening. "Kenya has changed forever," he says.
Yet the gains have come with challenges. Human rights groups continue to raise concerns about abductions, disappearances and restrictions on civic freedoms following the demonstrations.
Nevertheless, the spirit of citizen vigilance that emerged in June 2024 remains intact.
Two years later, the June 25 uprising stands as one of the most consequential political events in modern Kenya.
It forced the withdrawal of a Finance Bill, triggered Cabinet changes, accelerated political realignments, elevated Gen Z into a national political force and placed governance, taxation and accountability at the centre of public discourse.
