Dr Peter Mbae, the man in charge of overseeing the implementation of government programmes and projects in President William Ruto's administration has resigned, citing frustrations as the reason.

Dr Mbae was the Head of the Government Delivery Services, a position he was appointed to on June 7, 2024 to help track and support the execution of President Ruto's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Dr Mbae confirmed the resignation in an interview with the Nation on Monday saying; "It is true l have resigned from my position as Head of Government Delivery Services, to pursue other personal interests."

Although Dr Mbae did not give details of the reasons behind his move, his resignation letter dated January 9, and addressed to Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, cites frustrations that hindered him from performing his duties pushed him to quit.

Peter Mbae resigns, highlights his frustrations working for Kenya Kwanza administration

"In June 2024, l was appointed as Head of Government Delivery Services(GDS) to among other things oversee the implementation of Government programmes and projects across Ministries, Departments and Agencies. I have served in the position diligently since my appointment with utmost commitment," stated Dr Mbae.

"However, despite my passion, focus and consistency to achieve sustainable transformation in the lives of citizens in line with the Kenya Kwanza Administration manifesto, l have found it difficult to deliver my services because issues that l have consistently brought to your attention have been resolved to date," he said.

In the letter, he states that he is not willing to continue serving in the position.

"It has not been possible to carry out my duties as intended and my position as Head of Government Delivery Services is no longer tenable.

"In order to be accountable to the people of Kenya, owing to the fact that the appointment was widely circulated l therefore request to formally disengage from my position so as to pursue other interests."

Dr Mbae's main role has been overseeing implementation of government programmes and projects across ministries, departments and agencies.

It included enhancing synergies, eliminating duplications and prioritising initiatives with the greatest socio-economic impact on citizens.

Dr Mbae was also responsible for tracking and reporting on the status of national government priorities, projects, programmes and presidential directives.

His exit adds to a growing list of senior officials in President Ruto's administration to resign.

Current Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi also resigned from his position of Attorney General in June 2024, before he was re-appointed to Cabinet.

Before his appointment to the position of Head of Government Delivery Services, Dr Mbae served as Secretary Investments Promotion, in the office of the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, between January and September 2023.

He also served as head of ministerial programmes in the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry between October 2023 to June 2024.

Although Dr Mbae insisted that his resignation was work-related, on Monday a source privy to happenings in the civil service revealed to the Nation that two more senior government officials would tender their resignations this week.

"Two more senior government officials, among them a Cabinet secretary, are set to resign from the Kenya Kwanza Administration in the coming days for political reasons," said the source.

"Some senior government officials, with future political ambitions, mainly from the Mt Kenya region, are becoming increasingly uncomfortable working in the Kenya Kwanza administration and some have decided to quit early for the sake of their political ambitions.

"They say they have listened to the ground and people want them to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.”
