The family of Margaret Nduta Macharia, the Kenyan who had been sentenced to death in Vietnam is relieved that she will now get to live after the Supreme Court sitting in Hoh Chi Minh City commuted the penalty to life in jail. However, they say their kin’s conviction has taken an anxious toll on them.
The decision came after she appealed the sentence handed down to her in March. And the verdict on Thursday, a final judicial decision, means she can spend the rest of her life in jail. However, she will have a chance for clemency whose powers are vested in the Vietnamese President, something the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs said it is pursuing.
