Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has accused politicians of engaging in early campaign activities ahead of the 2027 General Election, alleging that some are hiring goons to fuel insecurity and disrupt public order.
Speaking in Nairobi on Sunday after attending a church service at AIC Plainsview, CS Murkomen said the government would take firm action against those involved in orchestrating violence and chaos.
He cited the recent incident at All Saints Cathedral, where individuals were captured on CCTV disrupting a service, saying investigations were underway and arrests would follow.
“The DCI is already analysing CCTV footage. One suspect has been arrested and others will be arrested. They will be taken to court and held to account,” he said.
The CS claimed that some politicians were using organised groups to attack rivals and create instability for political gain, adding that the government was moving to dismantle such networks.
“Some of these gangs are formed for economic reasons, but others are hired and facilitated by politicians for selfish political interests,” he said.
He said ongoing security reforms and operations targeting criminal gangs would soon bear fruit, insisting that all perpetrators would be brought to justice regardless of their affiliations.
“Our next phase of security operations is to eliminate these threats. With the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit and other efforts in place, we will succeed,” he said.
Turning to recent cases of school unrest, CS Murkomen urged parents to take greater responsibility in raising disciplined children, saying moral upbringing had been weakened by excessive reliance on digital devices and reduced family engagement.
“We have left our children to be raised by phones, computers and television. Many do not attend Sunday school, camps or community activities like we used to,” he said.
He argued that rising cases of school arson and indiscipline reflected broader failures in parenting and socialisation.
“When you see children burning schools or engaging in such behaviour, it reflects what is missing in their upbringing at home,” he said.
The Interior CS also cautioned against blaming teachers and school administrators exclusively for the unrest, saying many parents were detached from their children’s daily lives.
“Paying school fees does not end your responsibility as a parent. You must remain involved in shaping your child’s behaviour and values,” he said.
