One person was killed and at least eight others were injured on Saturday evening after a matatu veered off the road and ploughed into pedestrians outside City Primary School in Nairobi.

“We managed to take the driver into custody, and the vehicle has already been towed from the scene,” Gigiri Deputy OCPD Daniel Birech said.

On Saturday night, reports indicated the number of those injured could rise.

Witnesses recounted a sudden and chaotic moment as the matatu swerved towards the crowd.

Mary Wambua, who was at the scene, said some of those who were hit by the matatu were teachers involved in the elections.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police said investigations are already underway to establish the cause of the accident.

Following the fatal crash, police officers temporarily blocked the road near City Primary School in Ngara to clear the wreckage and ease the flow of traffic.

The closure allowed emergency crew to remove the damaged matatu and other vehicles from the scene.

Traffic was later restored after the scene was secured, as investigators commenced investigations.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially in busy school zones and areas where large crowds gather.
