Police bust car theft syndicate, arrest 'mastermind' Kitale teacher

A secondary school teacher is among three people police have arrested in connection to a car theft syndicate in the North and South Rift regions.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation’s Crime Research and Investigations Bureau on Friday arrested David Ogeisia Migosi, 48, of St Columbans Secondary School in Kitale and two others.
The detectives found Mr Migosi with 17 logbooks believed to be fake. A Toyota Probox purported to have been stolen was also confiscated from him.
The DCI believes the teacher is the mastermind of the syndicate said to incorporate employees of the National Transport and Safety Authority’s offices in Nairobi.
“Upon interrogation, officers proceeded to his hideout where two other accomplices, Asman Memba Bakari (38) and Jeremiah Yego Kiptoo (34) were arrested,” a statement from DCI boss George Kinoti said in a statement.
ITEMS RECOVERED
In March, Mr Kinoti commissioned a team to investigate rising cases of car theft in the North and South Rift regions.
So far, the operation has seen the recovery, between July 2 and July 3, of seven vehicles stolen from different towns within the Rift.
They are; Toyota Axio KCL 790N, Toyota Hilux KBB 876A, White Toyota Probox without number plates, Toyota DX KBJ 316D, Toyota Premio KBN 377A, Toyota Hiace KCL 378K and Isuzu D-MAX Pick Up KCR 734T.
The police officers further recovered fake care registration number plates, chassis number stickers, ignition systems, a check book, dismantled number plates, chassis plates and sale agreements.
By press time, police and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) were investigating whether the number plates corroborated the car chassis numbers.
The arrest of the three brings to 12 the number of suspects apprehended in connection to the crime whose cases escalated between April and June.
So daring is the gang that it has reportedly stolen vehicles from a police yard and highly guarded estates within Eldoret, Kitale, Kericho, Bomet, Narok and Nakuru.
The DCI says the ongoing operation will see more suspects netted.
