Gachagua: This is how Ruto is plotting to weaken the opposition ahead of 2027

The United Opposition has expressed concerns over efforts by President William Ruto’s administration to divide its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a church service in Kasarani, Nairobi, on Sunday, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Rigathi Gachagua claimed that the ruling government was using allies to woo Wiper Patriotic Front under Kalonzo Musyoka.
Addressing the congregation and supporters, Mr Gachagua said democracy was under threat in Dr Ruto’s political regime, adding that the President was attempting to weaken the opposition ahead of the elections.
“There have been many efforts by Ruto and his allies to woo Kalonzo Musyoka, with people trailing him everywhere and inviting him to join them,” Mr Gachagua said.
Despite these attempts, the DCP leader said the United Opposition remains united and will soon announce a single candidate to face President Ruto.
“I want to assure the people of Kenya that we, as the United Opposition, are clear in our minds. We shall stay united, and at the right time, we will present one candidate to face William Ruto. The relationship between Kalonzo and I is not about leadership or politics; it is about family. Blood is thicker than water. We will not be separated,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President also reiterated calls for the ODM leadership to withdraw its support from Kenya Kwanza and join the opposition to deliver the changes Kenyans want.
Gachagua also revealed plans by the United Opposition to strengthen its support in Nairobi County and secure a majority of seats in the 2027 general election.
The former DP further stated that the sale of Safaricom PLC shares should involve public participation for the sake of transparency and accountability.
Mr Musyoka echoed these sentiment, citing the need for government accountability and respect for Kenyans’ rights.
“Never again should Kenyans lose their lives as they did in 2023 and 2024 because they were hungry. They have a constitutional right to demonstrate peacefully without harming others,” Mr Kalonzo said.
He also criticised the manner in which the government is selling Safaricom PLC shares, describing it as part of a broader pattern of mismanagement.

“We want national assets like the Kenya Pipeline Company and other strategic, security-related assets, including those in the church, to be part of public participation,” he said.
Member of Parliament for Embakasi North James Gakuya said residents of Nairobi have yet to feel meaningful change under Governor Johnson Sakaja.
However, he said the 2027 general elections would bring a leadership overhaul at both City Hall and the national government.
