As the Mountain voting bloc continues to experience political turbulence ahead of next year’s vote, five ominous forces have emerged, unsettling key political formations in the region.
Pundits say the region’s response to these fears will shape what replaces the 2022 yellow wave that saw President William Ruto secure 87 per cent of Mt Kenya’s vote under UDA on his way to State House.
Political commentator Prof Macharia Munene argues that current indicators do not show the President at ease over the Mountain.
“For the record, it will not be business as usual for the President and his loyalists unless they shift into overdrive; many dynamics have shifted, not to his advantage,” he said.
Yet in a region widely perceived to be drifting towards the opposition, uncertainty persists over who will emerge as the alternative power. It is within that vacuum that five political forces are taking root, including the trajectory of former President Uhuru Kenyatta .
Observers note that shifting alliances within the region continue to reshape campaign calculations for all major political players.

While Mr Kenyatta has said he supports democratic change in 2027, he remains unclear on his direction, left or right. He has endorsed Dr Fred Matiang’i and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka , linked to the Azimio coalition he fronted in 2022 before losing to Ruto.
Dr Matiang’i’s political script for reorganising the Jubilee Party as the Mountain’s party of choice remains unclear, while Rigathi Gachagua appears to position Musyoka as an alternative.
“This uncertainty has left many aspirants disillusioned, operating without clear direction,” said Ngunjiri Wambugu.
He said the party now operates like a stalled bus, unable to serve as a reliable platform.
“Jubilee appears content with existing and hoping for political luck,” he said.
This crossroads has ignited energy within DCP led by Gachagua. At the same time, party structures are becoming increasingly fluid as leaders test influence ahead of nominations.
Internal competition within UDA and emerging opposition formations is intensifying political pressure across the Mountain.
Jeremiah Kioni described Gachagua as the opposition face and central figure in the Wantam narrative,and endorsed him as King of the Mountain, raising fears that an Uhuru–Gachagua tie could destabilise Jubilee.
Although he projects commitment to fair nominations, critics say he favours allies, raising questions about internal democracy.
Gachagua endorsed Senator Kamau Murango as the future governor and has been accused of favouring allies from his post-impeachment realignment.
His strategy is consolidation and survival, capturing seats while locking out UDA loyalists.
Tension has unsettled Ruto loyalists, and some may reconsider their allegiance. Ruto urges allies to remain defiant, saying leadership is determined by voters and not intimidation.
Maina Kamanda sympathises with Ruto loyalists, warning of limited refuge if the Mountain consolidates. The question is whether the Mountain unites, pursues joint nominations or allows competition.

Beyond UDA, DCP and Jubilee, there are Martha Karua’s PLF, Peter Munya’s PNU, Kawira Mwangaza’s Umoja, and Justin Muturi’s DP. Some analysts warn that unresolved leadership questions could define the region’s political direction in 2027.
These developments have also heightened interest among voters who are closely monitoring elite realignments.
Political messaging across the Mountain has increasingly reflected uncertainty, rivalry and strategic repositioning.
Campaign organisers say early mobilisation efforts are now focused on consolidating blocs and preventing fragmentation.
Ultimately, the outcome will depend on how these competing interests are managed before the polls. The Mountain remains the decisive battleground as leaders prepare for a fiercely contested election. Time is critical.
