Raila Odinga International Stadium: Ruto new name for Talanta Stadium
Talanta Stadium has been renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was nowhere on the dais at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, but his spirit seemed to shape every beat of the Jamhuri Day ceremony led by President William Ruto.
From the unusually solemn cadence of President Ruto’s speech to the minute of silence that stilled the packed stadium, the celebration unfolded as Kenya’s first major national ritual in the shadow of his absence.
For the many Kenyans who have been accustomed for decades to his presence during moments of high symbolism, adjusting to the empty space he left behind was not easy. Mr Kennedy Ogeto, who has religiously attended national events at the park, reflected on the moment.
“It feels strange. Some of us came here because of him. But now, to honour his legacy, we have come today to celebrate him as a freedom fighter,” Mr Ogeto said.
President Ruto remembered Raila as “a stalwart of our country’s democratic journey” whose “courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of the people shaped defining chapters of our national story.” He cast his long-time rival in terms usually reserved for founding-era heroes.
The tribute grew even more pointed moments later.
“I now respectfully urge you to join me in observing one minute of silence in honour and remembrance of the Rt Hon Raila Odinga, and to honour his service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy,” President Ruto said, asking that Raila’s spirit “continue to guide our nation forward.”
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja seized the Jamhuri Day spotlight to call on the President to immortalise Raila Odinga’s legacy.
He urged that the soon-to-be-completed 60,000-seater state-of-the-art Talanta Stadium be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium, framing the move as a tribute to the late leader’s decades-long fight for democracy and the empowerment of ordinary Kenyans.

“We kindly request our beloved President that next year’s Jamhuri Day celebration be held at the new Talanta Stadium, and we ask that it be named Raila Odinga Stadium,” Mr Sakaja told the assembled crowd at Nyayo Stadium, prompting cheers and applause that rippled through the terraces.
He emphasised that the gesture would allow future generations to connect with Raila’s enduring contribution to the nation.
President Ruto later responded in his speech, acknowledging the proposal and assuring Kenyans that it would be realised once construction of the stadium is complete.
“I have heard… Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium? Once we finish it, we will do that,” he said, signalling that the stadium would indeed stand as a lasting monument to Raila’s political legacy.
Raila’s death two months ago has left the country at a delicate political crossroads. For over 40 years, his presence shaped the opposition, often acting as a counterweight to state power and a rallying point for demands for reform.
With his passing, the architecture of dissent, from street mobilisations to courtroom challenges, faces a future without its most recognisable voice.

The Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo laid bare that transition. While the event was intended to celebrate Kenya’s independence, the day unfolded with the tone of a country taking stock of a new political era — one where Raila’s absence may be as consequential as his presence once was.
The Head of State’s tribute can be interpreted as an act of national healing, while others viewed it as a pragmatic recognition that Raila’s legacy, particularly his role in the fight for multiparty democracy and the 2010 Constitution, is now too deeply woven into Kenya’s identity to ignore.
