UK-based boxing champion Anthony Joshua has posted publicly for the first time since surviving a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people.
Joshua, 36, posted a photo on Instagram in remembrance of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, two of his close friends. Tributes from his fans flooded the comments of the photo.
The boxer sustained minor injuries when his vehicle collided with another car in Ogun State, Nigeria.
Authorities said preliminary findings suggest the vehicle carrying Joshua was likely speeding when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside. He was rescued from the wreckage by onlookers, with some filming the moments after the car crashed.
Joshua, who is the son of British-Nigerian parents, attended a boarding school in Ikenne, 53 miles from where the crash happened, before returning to Britain at age 12. He was on his way to visit relatives for New Year celebrations.
The accident occurred just over a week after Joshua knocked out American social media star Jake Paul in the sixth round of a bout in Miami.
The driver of the vehicle involved in a crash, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court in connection with the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State Police Command said in a statement at the time. He was charged on four counts, including causing death by dangerous driving.
