Trump nominates career envoy Henry Wooster for Kenya diplomatic post
President Donald Trump submitted the nomination of Mr Henry Wooster to the US Senate for confirmation.
The United States has nominated Henry T Wooster as its next ambassador to Kenya, a move of Washington’s growing strategic interest with one of its key allies in East Africa.
President Donald Trump submitted the nomination to the US Senate which awaits confirmation before Mr Wooster can assume the post in Nairobi.
The veteran diplomat is expected to take over at a time when Kenya and the United States are expanding across trade, security, technology, climate action and regional peace initiatives.
Kenya is one of Washington’s most strategic partners on the continent and was designated a Major Non-Nato Ally by the US in 2024, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to receive the status.
Mr Wooster is a career diplomat with more than three decades of experience in foreign affairs and national security. He has held several high-profile diplomatic assignments across the globe as a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor.
Currently, he serves as Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Haiti, where he has been overseeing American diplomatic operations amid the country’s ongoing political and security challenges.
Before his Haiti assignment, Mr Wooster served as the US Ambassador to Jordan from 2020 to 2023, where he advanced American interests in the Middle East.
His extensive diplomatic résumé also includes serving as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, overseeing policy on key countries in North Africa and the Middle East.
Additionally, Mr Wooster served in US embassies abroad; as deputy chief of mission in Paris, political counselor in Islamabad, director for Central Asia at the National Security Council and Foreign Policy Adviser to the US Joint Special Operations Command.
His experience spans some of the world’s most complex geopolitical environments, including assignments that involve counterterrorism, regional security, conflict resolution and diplomatic engagement.
Kenya-US relations
Analysts say the appointment reflects Washington’s intention to maintain a strong diplomatic engagement with Kenya, which has emerged as a regional anchor in peace and security efforts across Africa and the Great Lakes region.
Kenya has been among the major partner in counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab, regional mediation efforts and efforts to stabilise neighbouring countries facing conflict. Further, Nairobi also hosts several international organisations and serves as a diplomatic hub for East and Central Africa.
Mr Wooster holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and a Master of Arts degree from Yale University. He also served in the US Army Reserve from 1985 to 2009 and is fluent in French and Russian, with working knowledge of Arabic, Persian and Aramaic.
His nomination also reflects Kenya’s growing importance in US foreign policy.
