Dubai Ndogo: Kenya’s Golden Desert

Imagine leaping across golden sand dunes with the turquoise Indian Ocean sparkling behind you. That is the magic of Mambrui Sand Dunes, fondly known as Dubai Ndogo (Small Dubai), in Kilifi County.
For 34-year-old Janet Chondo, the adventure was worth a 250-kilometre journey from Lunga Lunga. “I am fascinated. What I am seeing here is exceptional and unforgettable,” she says.
And she is not alone. Tourists from Kenya and around the world are flocking to Mambrui to enjoy quad biking, camel and horse rides, sandboarding, archery and photography—all against the breathtaking backdrop of sand, sea and sky.
Unlike Dubai’s busy desert attractions, Mambrui offers something different: adventure without the crowds, nature without the noise, and an authentic coastal experience.
But the dunes are more than a tourist attraction. They are transforming lives. A community-based organisation manages the site, with tourism income helping pay school fees for children with disabilities, support vulnerable families and create jobs for local guides, youth and women.
Today, Mambrui attracts up to 700–1,000 visitors on busy weekends and holidays, with local businesses benefiting from the growing crowds.
From a once-underused landscape has emerged a vibrant tourism gem—proof that Kenya’s coast has far more to offer than beaches.
